Wizkid wins big at BBMA, to release “Sound from the other side” in July
The just-concluded 2017 Billboard Music Award eventually turned out right for Nigeria’s Afro pop star, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, known as Wizkid.
The Chief Executive Officer of Starboy Records added three more awards to his already crowded shelf last Sunday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The Ojuelegba boy, who received seven nominations for his joint work with American singer, Drake, won three of them successfully. Wizkid now wears the following awards on his hat: The Hot 100 song award, The R&B song award and the Top R&B Collaboration award. And he will be the first Nigerian to win at the BBMAs.
On the other hand, Drake was the biggest winner of the day, clinching over 13 awards, making him the artist with the most awards in a single year, a record Adele used to hold with 12 wins.
Meanwhile, following his new feats in the Afrobeat space, the Daddy yo crooner is set to release his latest body of work in an EP he dubs, “Sound from the other side” onJuly 7. Speaking in an interview with Revolt TV during the week, Wizkid hints that the anticipated project will cross-pollinate the musical dexterities of his American and Nigerian music acts.
He said: “Afro beats is getting a lot of attention right now. People are really loving the sounds, so I was like, “You know what, it will just be a great idea for me to do a project whereby I try to fuse the sounds with artistes out here (America) with my local producers back home and some international producers as well, like do something special like a playlist for the summer time.”
The singer, who is also nominated for the BET awards coming up on the July 17, said he is intent on making more music in the future.
